PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project was undertaken for J. Rainey & Co., a renowned company of steeplejacks, under the supervision of conservation architect Chris Southgate. The problem was caused when the asphalt seals on the chimney caps failed over the course of many years and rain water penetrated down through the cap and into the bricks the corbel were built around. The heave action caused by the freeze-thaw cycle during the winter burst the corbels and allowed more water to penetrate the corbels causing further damage. All the work was carried out on site using restoration mortar to build up layer upon layer until we restored the corbels back to their original size and shape. We repaired six chimneys using this method. The owner, architect and contractor were very pleased with the outcome, as were we.
